Q: Can you recreate a piece of jewelry someone left you?
A: Usually, yes. This is one of the most common requests we get, and it is almost always the same story: a grandmother's necklace that a sibling has, or a piece that was lost, or one worn so thin it can no longer be worn at all. Because The Honest Jeweler makes everything to order, one piece at a time, a remake is not a special exception, it is just how the work already happens. What we need from you is a clear photo, ideally a few angles, some idea of the size, and the piece itself if you still have it. What we will not do is copy a living designer's protected work. Recreating your family's piece is a different thing entirely, and it is the good kind of custom work. Start with the custom collection.
What if I only have a photo? A photo is usually enough to work from. More angles are better.
Can it be an exact copy? Close, honestly, rather than identical. Handmade means handmade.
Can you match the metal? Yes. Sterling silver through solid 14k and 18k gold.
What if the Hebrew on the original is worn away?
That is common, and it is fixable. Worn Hebrew is often still readable from a rubbing or a good raking-light photo, and once we know the words, we set them in real Hebrew letterforms and send you a proof to check before anything is cut. This is the step that matters most, because a remade heirloom with the wrong letters is worse than no remake at all. If nobody in the family can read what it said, bring us what you know and we will work from there.
Will the Hebrew be accurate? You approve a proof of the actual letters first.
Can you copy handwriting from the original? Yes, that is a normal request.
Can you engrave the back? Usually. A name or a date is a good use of it.
Can you make more than one, for the siblings?
Yes, and it is a lovely reason to do this. One piece goes to whoever has the original, and the others are made to match, which quietly solves the problem of one heirloom and three children. Since each piece is made individually anyway, matching a set is straightforward. Small differences between them are the nature of handmade work, and most families find that they like that.
Can each one be personalized? Yes. Same design, different name or date on the back.
Is custom work returnable? No. Custom and engraved pieces cannot be returned, so the proof step matters.
