Q: How do you measure your hand for a bangle?
A: Measure your hand, not your wrist. A bangle is a closed circle with no clasp, so it has to clear your knuckles to get on at all. Tuck your thumb into your palm like you are already sliding the bangle on, then wrap a strip of paper or a piece of string around the widest part of your hand. Mark where it overlaps, lay it flat against a ruler, and that length is the circumference you need to clear. To get the inner diameter, divide that circumference by 3.14. Most bangles land around a 2.4, 2.6 or 2.8 inch inner diameter. Then choose your fit: a snug bangle sits close to the wrist, a looser one slides and stacks. Why not measure my wrist? Your wrist is smaller than your hand. Size to the wrist and the bangle will not go on.
Paper or measuring tape? Either. A soft tape measure is easiest, a strip of paper works just as well.
Between two sizes? Size up. A bangle that will not pass your knuckle is unwearable, a slightly loose one is not.
What if I have large knuckles?
Large knuckles are the single most common reason a bangle does not fit, and they are exactly why the hand measurement matters more than the wrist. Measure across the knuckles with the thumb tucked and take the widest reading you get. If the number feels far bigger than your wrist, that is normal and it is the number to trust. A cuff, which has an opening, is the other honest answer here. It slips on from the side and skips the knuckle problem entirely.
Is a cuff easier? Yes. An open cuff does not need to clear the knuckle at all.
Will a bigger bangle just fall off? A bangle is meant to move. It should slide, not grip.
Can a bangle be resized? A solid bangle is hard to resize. Get the size right the first time.
How much room should a bangle actually have?
It should pass the knuckle with a firm push, then move freely on the wrist. If you have to force it, it is too small, and you will stop wearing it. If it slides past your hand with no resistance at all, it is too big and it will spin around and catch on sleeves. Aim for the size that goes on with a little effort and then settles loosely. If you are engraving a bangle, get this right first, because an engraved piece is made for you and cannot be swapped later.
Does the width of the bangle change the size? A wide bangle feels tighter than a thin one at the same diameter.
Stacking several? Keep them the same size so they sit together.
