Send food to a shiva house. Not jewelry.
That is the honest answer and we sell jewelry, so take it as meant. During the seven days the family is not shopping, not cooking, and not in a state to appreciate a gift they have to react to. A platter, a meal, kosher baked goods from somewhere the family will actually eat from. That is the gift.
Jewelry has a place in Jewish mourning, but it is later, and knowing the difference is most of what this page is for.
The shiva window: what to send
Food, and specifically food that needs nothing done to it. A seudat havra'ah, the meal of comfort, is traditionally brought by others for the mourners' first meal after the burial. After that the house fills with people and someone has to feed them.
Check kashrut standards before ordering. A well-meant platter the family cannot eat becomes a problem they have to manage politely, which is the opposite of help. If you do not know, ask someone who does.
The Honest Jeweler does not sell food, gift baskets or shiva platters. We are telling you what to send anyway because it is the right answer during those seven days.
After shloshim: when a keepsake makes sense
The thirty days after burial, shloshim, is when the structure falls away and people are often at their worst. That is the window where something to hold starts to matter. A yahrzeit, or an unveiling, is the other natural moment.
What works is a piece with words rather than a symbol. Something the person can read when they need to, and that nobody else has to notice.
גם זה יעבור, this too shall pass, is the line people reach for most. We make it as the This Too Shall Pass bangle and as a spinner ring. The bangle is the more common sympathy gift because it needs no sizing.
גם זו לטובה, Gam Zu L'Tova, this too is for the good, is harder. It is a real and deeply held idea, and it is also the kind of thing that lands badly if the grief is fresh or the loss was terrible. We make the Gam Zu Letova bangle and we would think carefully about who receives it.
ה' עמדי, Hashem is with me, is gentler. The G-d Is With Me ring says something without instructing the mourner how to feel, which is the failure mode of most comfort gifts.
For hands that will not settle
Grief is physical and often shows up as restlessness. A spinning band gives the hands a repetitive thing to do. The Ein Od Milvado spinner ring carries אין עוד מלבדו, there is nothing else but Him, and it is the piece we sell most into this situation.
It is jewelry. It does not treat grief, and we are not going to suggest it does.
Engraving a name or a date
A Hebrew name, a yahrzeit date, or a line the person used to say. This is the version people keep. We set real Hebrew letterforms and proof them with you first, which matters more than usual here, because a misspelled name on a memorial piece is not something you can laugh off. Our Hebrew engraving guide covers what fits where.
The sympathy gifts collection holds the comfort pieces together, and the engraved bracelets are the blanks if you want your own words.
What we do not make
No urns, no cremation jewelry, no ash pendants. Those are outside both our catalog and the tradition most of our customers are working within.
Common questions
Is it appropriate to give jewelry during shiva? Generally no. Send food during the seven days and save a keepsake for after shloshim or for the yahrzeit.
What do you say when you give it? Less than you think. Attach a note with the Hebrew phrase and its translation and let the piece do the rest.
Can you engrave a yahrzeit date in the Hebrew calendar? Yes. Send us the date as the family records it.
Is a spinner ring too casual for a memorial gift? Not in our experience. The plain bands read as ordinary jewelry, which is usually what a grieving person wants rather than something that announces itself.
Do you sell kosher shiva baskets? No. Order those from a kosher caterer or a shiva delivery service the family trusts.
